Hungary announces major natural gas import deal with the US

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced a major agreement with the U.S. to import 400 million cubic metres of LNG a year.

“We are interested in purchasing energy from as many sources and via as many routes as possible, ensuring the lowest prices,” he posted on X.

Today we have reached an important milestone in American-Hungarian energy cooperation by signing a contract for 400 million cubic metres of LNG a year.

This means that over the next five years, two billion cubic metres of American LNG will arrive in Hungary.

There is currently no information on the price, cost, and route of the LNG secured in the contract, notes Portfolio. Previous estimates noted a purchase of 2 billion cubic meters of U.S. LNG worth $600 million under a five-year contract.

Earlier this month, Hungary also signed a new natural gas purchase agreement with Azerbaijan for 800 million cubic meters over two years.

This latest contract with the U.S. means that, together with agreements concluded this year with Shell, Engie, and Azerbaijan’s SOCAR, the amount of non-Russian natural gas arriving in Hungary in partially liquefied form could jump to 16 percent of the country’s annual consumption (8.5 billion cubic meters in 2024).
