At least one group of Spanish-language bilingual schools is closed Dec. 19 due to low attendance amid reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity throughout Columbus.
Columbus Bilingual Academy North, West, and Central decided to close due to significantly low attendance, according to Michael Mora Brenes, principal of Columbus Bilingual Academy North. The Columbus Bilingual Academies are a group of charter schools focused on bilingual education, with a focus on daily Spanish instruction.

The decision from the schools came as reports about ICE activity in Columbus have surged. City officials have confirmed that an ICE operation is ongoing and have contacted the federal government.
In January, the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, rescinded a policy directive that prevented agents from enforcing in “sensitive areas” such as places of worship, schools, and hospitals.
Since reports of federal law enforcement operations began to circulate on Dec. 18, several area charter schools have found themselves at the center of rumors and reports of ICE activity.
