Aussie’s shock at ‘concerning’ find inside made in India Coles pickles

An Aussie shopper has sparked debate after sharing photos of what he feared could be maggots inside Coles brand pickles that were made in India.

Shane Cuthbert, a former council and state election candidate from Cairns, Far North Queensland, shared photos of the pickles and the jar on Facebook on the weekend and asked the supermarket giant: “Are these maggots in my Coles pickles from India?”

The images showed a jar labelled Polski Ogorki Dill Cucumbers with “Made in India” printed on the back, and a half-eaten pickle that had been cut open to show the inside.

“I wondered why the inside of these pickles were so soft having eaten a large portion of them and decided to cut one open to find what looks like maggots. I then realised the pickles are from India, made from Indian pickles and Indian water which concerns me,” he wrote.

“Do you know what else is odd, is that the pickles are labelled polski ogorki which gives the impression they are sourced from Europe, not India. I shouldn’t have to add this but I’ve got nothing against India, I just don’t think their farming and food production processes are as strict as ours.”

The shopper also objected to the pickles being presented as Polish (Facebook)

The post attracted thousands of comments and a variety of theories about the pale maggot-like objects that could be seen inside the pickles, from sprouted seeds, to moth larvae.

“It’s a natural process called ‘vivipary’ where the seeds start to germinate inside the fruit. They often look like little white tails, which can be pretty alarming if you don’t know what they are! They’re completely harmless and safe to eat,” one commenter said.

“I wish that was the case, these turned out to be moth larvae and they had been eating the inside of the pickle,” Mr Cuthbert replied.

“Bro, they are maggots. Call Melbourne Health. The product need to be recalled. Keep it as evidence,” wrote another.

“This is 100% a grub infested cucumber pickled. No way they are seeds, just look at the inside of the cucumber, if you have even grown any veggies in your life you know this is not how it should look like inside even if it is pickled,” said a third.

Other Indian users objected to their country being mentioned in the post, with many insisting the objects were just sprouted seeds and safe to eat.

“Please don’t blame India, if food is not preserved properly it is gone get rotten. Every week my Coles bread is getting bad with valid date from Coles. But I don’t blame Australia. We live here and follow rules pay taxes and do whatever is needed,” wrote one man.

“What does this mean… ‘are these maggots in my Coles from India?’ Sounds like you are trying to say the maggots are from India. Do you think that your gherkins only have these maggots coz they are from India?” asked a second person.

“Why always troll India? As if other countries don’t have stale food. I had bought a product from Woolies, a dessert and it was stale when we tasted it. So should I blame the entire country Australia for it,” another remarked.
