France: 58% of French want Macron to resign, 90% believe country is in decline

France is at the point of a deep political crisis, the main point of reference of which has become the presidency of Emmanuel Macron, writes Do Rzeczy, citing data from recent poll results showing the scale of the collapse of trust in the government and growing concerns about the future of the country.

Support for the French president has fallen to 25 percent, the lowest level during his term. A staggering 58 percent of French people expect his immediate resignation, unwilling to wait until his term ends in May 2027.

At the same time, only 35 percent of respondents believe Macron can prevent the country from being drawn into war, while 39 percent see a very serious risk of such a scenario.

The scale of public pessimism is overwhelming, with 90 percent of the French believing the country is declining, including 32 percent who believe this process is irreversible.

Only 10 percent of respondents believe France is not collapsing. This sentiment translates into open frustration: 96 percent of respondents declare anger at the state of the country, while 59 percent consider actions leading to a complete state paralysis to be justified. Some 43 percent demand the immediate dissolution of parliament.

In parallel to the French dissatisfaction with the president, a public finance crisis is growing. France’s public debt has exceeded €3.5 trillion, equivalent to 117 percent of GDP. Only Greece and Italy have higher relative debt levels in the European Union. The government plans to borrow a record €310 billion in 2026, with projected economic growth of just 0.9 percent. Financial markets are reacting to this situation with an increase in risk premiums – French bond yields have already surpassed those of Spain, Italy, and Greece.

Social discontent is widespread and systemic. Only 10 percent of the French trust political parties, while a mere 20 percent trust their MPs. In contrast, 82 percent say they trust small businesses and 47 percent trust large companies, underscoring the scale of the political class’s rejection. Only 40 percent of the population declares trust in the European Union.

Radical sentiment is also growing. While 85 percent of respondents expect a “true leader,” 34 percent believe that political systems other than democracy can be just as good, and 52 percent support reinstating the death penalty. Another 63 percent of French people do not feel at home in their own country, and 65 percent believe that too many foreigners live in France.
