A photograph of an ad in Hindi targeted at foreign home buyers on the back of a bus in Christchurch has sparked outrage in New Zealand.
The ad, from Chinese real estate site HouGarden, which describes itself as the “New Zealand’s #1 property platform for Asian families”, has a photo of a Sikh family and a phrase in Hindi translated as “complete information about your home in your own language”.
The image was shared on X and Instagram and attracted thousands of comments from frustrated locals saying they were upset with the rapid changes caused by mass immigration.
Seriously…NZ is an English speaking country. This shit is ridiculous… pic.twitter.com/IlLtQFUboC

“NZ is being colonised again! Should be illegal to advertise in NZ in a foreign language. It’s not very inclusive is it? Makes people feel like foreigners in their own country,” wrote Truenewsnz in the caption to the photo in a viral post.
“Seriously… NZ is an English speaking country. This shit is ridiculous,” wrote Kiwistream NZ on X.
“Would anyone accept a property platform for White families? Just imagine the outrage,” one man wrote in response to HouGarden’s “Asian families” slogan.
“Considering these Indians understand English this is ridiculous. And if they don’t understand English why the hell are we letting them in?” asked another.
“This morning I saw a bus exactly same location advertising “Bank of China” “loan” “1%”, the rest of words were in Mandarin,” an Instagram commenter wrote, while another popular comment simply said: “The Great Replacement.”
Some Indians also objected to the ad, with one writing on X: “Awful, being an Indian I don’t like this, New Zealand have their own culture and values that we Indians are ruining too.”
“It’s not a problem if the government is bringing only a small amount of Indians to mix them with local communities. Problem comes when they are bringing in a large amount the size of a small NZ town every year. Feels weird as an Indian so I can’t imagine how the locals feel,” said another.
The anger over the ad comes after Prime Minister Christopher Luxon concluded a controversial Free Trade Agreement with India that provides new visa categories for Indians, sparking “remigration now” protests.
