Orbán, Nawrocki say leave the issue of Greenland to the US and Denmark

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has praised Polish President Karol Nawrocki for his stance on Greenland, where tensions are brewing over escalating rhetoric from U.S. President Trump that the island must become part of the United States.

“Well said. Good point!” Orbán posted along with Nawrocki’s comments on the matter. “I think that the discussion about Greenland should first of all remain the matter between the PM of Denmark and president Donald Trump,” the Polish president wrote.

The “Realm of Greenland” includes Greenland’s status as a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, alongside Denmark proper and the Faroe Islands. But as a NATO country, any attack or forced takeover of Greenland would thus be an attack on NATO, which should concern, and via Article 1 does concern, all NATO members.

Full-scale war between two or more NATO members has never occurred, nor has one member ever attacked another.

Remix News reported yesterday on four NATO members sending troops for reconnaissance and to prep additional defenses for the island. Now, more countries have joined, with Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands, and the U.K. all committing troops, according to the BBC.

Macron says “the initial contingent would be reinforced soon with ‘land, air, and sea assets.’”

As for NATO head Mark Rutte, he has remained strategically silent, although not all have seen it that way. Pressed for his stance on the matter by Danish lawmaker Stine Bosse at an EP meeting, Rutte again dodged the issue, stating simply: “My role as secretary general, I’m very clear — I never ever comment when there are discussions within the alliance. You work behind the scenes,” aaccording to France24.

Furthermore, there are the people of Greenland to consider. In a 2025 poll, a nearly total majority, 85 percent, stated they do not want to leave the Realm.

Following talks on Wednesday between Denmark, Greenland, and the U.S., Danish diplomacy said that the discussion was “frank but also constructive.”

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, however, stated that the United States’ position had not been influenced. “We have not been able to change the U.S. position. We still have a fundamental disagreement, so we will continue the talks,” Rasmussen said.

Referring to Trump’s arguments that Greenland under Danish rule could become a target of China or Russia, Rasmussen said: “There is no immediate threat from China or Russia,” emphasizing that “there is no need for the U.S. to take over Greenland,” notes Do Rzeczy.
