Man, 36, arrested after Melbourne church allegedly set on fire

A man has been arrested after a church in Melbourne’s west was allegedly set on fire overnight.

Fire and Rescue Victoria responded to reports of a blaze at the Church of Christ Maidstone at about 1am on Sunday and firefighters arrived to find the front of the building and part of the roof on fire.

Firefighters were able to contain the flames and prevent major damage, and no injuries were reported.

Police believe the fire was suspicious, but said no one was inside when the fire was allegedly lit, 9News reported.

A 36-year-old man from Footscray was arrested near the scene and is being interviewed by police.
