Spain: Moroccan migrant arrested for raping and strangling 54-year-old woman to death in Barakaldo

A 27-year-old immigrant of Moroccan origin is being accused of raping and murdering a Spanish woman, 54-year-old Josune M.D., in Barakaldo, near the city of Bilbao in the Basque region. The case has already caught the attention of the leader of the Vox party, Santiago Abascal, who said it shows the far-left government’s plans to regularize hundreds of thousands of migrants is a “crime.”

Police officers found the woman’s corpse inside her own apartment. The preliminary autopsy indicates that the probable cause of death was strangulation, although part of her body was found submerged in a bathtub.

Forensics also found a bruise on the head and injuries in the genital area. There was a clear lack of resistance on the part of the victim, but investigators believe a blow to the head rendered the victim stunned or unconscious before she was raped and murdered.

The alleged suspect, who worked alongside the woman in the delicatessen of a supermarket in the Cruces neighborhood, attended a Christmas dinner with her and other colleagues the night before. Although the incident happened nearly two months ago, it is only now being reported by Spanish newspaper La Gaceta.

After visiting several bars and entertainment venues in the Zaballa area, both left by taxi to the victim’s home in the Urban neighborhood. Footage shows that Josune was practically asleep during the ride, which ended shortly after six in the morning. However, both the man and the victim entered her home together.

According to the Basque police (Ertzaintza) report, after the alleged murder, the suspect left the home but went back to retrieve his mobile phone, which he had forgotten inside. He even managed to have a bus driver call a locksmith, who allowed him back into the apartment.

The apartment was flooded from a bathtub faucet he reportedly left running, but he picked up his device and left a few minutes later.

Meanwhile, one of Josune’s daughters, surprised because her mother was not answering any calls, went to the apartment with her sister. They had previously heard the voice of a man on a home app connected to their mother’s home and wanted to investigate.

It was the eldest daughter who found the lifeless body of her mother in the bathtub. A neighbor also arrived when he heard screams. Both of them then alerted the police.

After leaving the victim’s home, police say the Moroccan man returned to the same bar to charge the phone and observe the police, who were already busy collecting surveillance video from the same establishment. The Moroccan was reportedly present when this was taking place, but he said nothing to the police at that time.

Late,r he went to the police station in Getxo and told the police a version of events that left out any mention of murder or rape. He said he had only lost his wallet, reported it missing, and left.

However, police quickly made a connection between the woman’s corpse and the Moroccan suspect. A homicide detective from the Territorial Criminal Investigation Service of Bizkaia located him at his home in Sopela and arrested him, just 12 hours after the murder took place.

The court on duty ordered him to be placed in a provisional prison.

Responding to the case, Abascal wrote on X: “Regularization… a crime against Spaniards.”

He is referring to the recent drive by the Pedro Sanchez government to legalize over 500,000 migrants, without even a vote in parliament. The whole process was done through “royal decree.”

Remarkably, in the same region where this rape and murder happened, recent bombshell police statistics showed that 64 percent of those arrested for crimes in the Basque region are foreigners, including 68 percent of sexual assaults and robberies. However, this group only makes up 14 percent of the Basque region population.

The statistics, which cover January 2025 to September 2025, are in many ways groundbreaking for Spain. It is the first time that the geographical origin of those arrested and under investigation was included in police data.

For serious crimes like intentional homicide or murder, foreigners committed 53.8 percent of all such crimes. A total of 13 people were arrested, and three were investigated. Six of those arrested were Spanish (either Basque or from other regions of Spain), and seven were foreigners. Two were from Maghreb and five from Latin America.
