Sweden: Arab charged after attempting to bite and gouge out eyes of male doctor for working with his wife

A 36-year-old Lebanese man in Malmö has been charged with two counts of assault after allegedly attacking both his wife and a doctor at the health center where she works as a nurse.

According to prosecutors, cited by the Samnytt news outlet, the woman sought treatment at her own workplace in early December after suffering a head injury that required stitches in an alleged assault by her husband, 36-year-old Salaheddine Hamze. Colleagues became concerned when she arrived bleeding and in shock, although she initially denied that her husband was at fault. Investigators later concluded she had been struck with an object at home.

Roughly two weeks later, the man allegedly entered the same clinic and violently attacked a male doctor, reportedly over suspicions about his wife working with male colleagues. Witnesses told police the attacker punched and headbutted the doctor, wrestled him to the ground, bit him, and tried to force his fingers into the victim’s eyes. The doctor suffered bite wounds that later became infected, along with facial injuries.

During the incident, the suspect is alleged to have told his wife, “Wait until we get home,” as staff intervened. Police arrested him outside the clinic shortly afterward.

The defendant denies both assaults, claiming instead that the doctor attacked him and alleging colleagues were trying to persuade his wife to distance herself from him. He also denied assaulting his wife, telling police her injuries resulted from accidentally hitting her head on a cupboard.

Police officers noted that the woman appeared extremely frightened during questioning, and investigators suspect she may be living under severe domestic control. Evidence in the case suggests the husband monitored her phone use and restricted her contact with others, particularly men.

Despite the charges, prosecutors have not requested deportation, reportedly because the man has several children in Sweden.

Sweden is grappling with an identity crisis after decades of mass immigration have led to disintegrated societies and a rise in honor-related violence.

In September last year, a mother, father, and two adult children from a Palestinian family faced trial for unlawful deprivation of liberty after allegedly kidnapping their 20-year-old daughter and keeping her monitored because she wanted to integrate into Western society.

And in May, seven people were charged in connection with the suspected honor killing of a woman in Eskilstuna, Sweden, after she attempted to divorce her husband.

Honor-related child abductions of children at risk of becoming “too Westernized” have also risen significantly in recent years, often found back in their parents’ country of origin against their will.

The Swedish government has been seeking to implement changes to protect Swedish values and social cohesion. In October last year, Sweden’s Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch called for a nationwide ban on burqas and niqabs in all public places, saying the country must “wake up from its naivety” about Islamism.

“Islam must adapt in Sweden. You can be a proud Swedish Muslim, Christian, Jew, or atheist, but there are fundamental Swedish values that must apply to us all,” she said.
