Pro-Confederate commentators often note that the only truly unconstitutional secession before and during the War Between the States was that of West Virginia from the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Constitution requires consent of a state for a part of it to leave, and the Richmond government never consented. There would be a delicious irony if dismemberment becomes a model for escaping the far-left takeover of the state where Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and Lee were born.
Following the Republican party’s disastrous decision to run a Jamaican immigrant to succeed Governor Glenn Youngkin, the victorious Democrat government went right to work. Governor Abagail Spanberger almost immediately ended an agreement with ICE that allowed state authorities to enforce immigration law, instead ordering officers “not to engage in fear-based policing, enforcement theater, or actions that create barriers to people seeking assistance in their time of need” — whatever any of that may mean. A new bill passed by the House would prevent ICE agents from arresting illegals outside a courthouse.
New gun control bills would criminalize some of the most common firearms and magazines, impose harsh requirements on storage and transport, and limit where weapons can be carried. Virginians who do not have “high”-capacity magazines confiscated would face thousands in fines and a year in jail, and there is no grandfather clause. If Senator Saddam Salim’s bill passes (he was born in Bangladesh), “assault weapons” will be banned.
Virginia Democrats introduced a bill to let felons out of jail early in certain cases, including those guilty of aggravated murder, sexual assault of a minor, human trafficking, terrorism, producing or filming child pornography, lynching, or treason. Though the new governor promised “affordability,” Democrats are also proposing new tax increases on everything from Amazon delivery to fantasy football. “Unconscious racial bias training” would be required for nurses to renew their licenses under a bill passed by the Senate.
Some may think voters will simply strike back, but this won’t easy. The Department of Justice is suing Virginia because it will not produce voter rolls despite widespread irregularities. The Virginia House is entertaining a bill introduced by black legislator Marcia “Cia” Price to prohibit recounting ballots by hand unless specifically authorized by law. This inspires little confidence in future elections. “Cia” also introduced a bill to restore voting rights for felons and mental incompetents.
Finally, to import reliable voters, Virginia Democrats are considering lifting the caps on generous grants to local government employees to make down payments on homes. This and continuing mass immigration and refugee resettlement means Democrats probably have a permanent majority.
Democrats are also moving to strip rural, white Virginia of political representation. Redistricting would eliminate nearly all conservative congressional districts. Though Kamala Harris won Virginia by a relatively narrow margin, Republicans could realistically expect only one seat out of 11. “You started it and we f***ing finished it,” said black Virginia Senate President Pro Tempore L. Louis Lucas. The matter may be decided by the courts, but Virginia Democrats are not backing down.
It may be time for white, rural Virginians to revisit a proposal made during earlier Democratic administrations. Some counties expressed interest in joining West Virginia, and West Virginia seems enthusiastic. West Virginia US Senator and former governor Jim Justice endorsed the idea. State Senator Chris Rose introduced a bill in November formally inviting 27 counties from Virginia and three from western Maryland to join. Western Maryland is also likely to lose its sole Republican congressman after Democrats moved to redistrict. Governor Wes Moore said redistricting is how to stop what he claimed was President Trump’s alleged efforts to “eliminate black leadership all over the country.” For Democrats, it’s always about race.
When West Virginia State Senator Rose introduced his bill, he pointed to the Virginia counties’ shared “Appalachian heritage, rural lifestyles, and a focus on individual liberties as a reason for unity.” Adding Virginia counties would shore up Greater West Virginia’s identity and help Virginians avoid being a conquered population governed by northern Virginia. Though the state senator did not say this, escaping to West Virginia would also mean that the areas’ largely white residents would not be subject to the whims of black machine politicians, immigrant enclaves, and federal employees who increasingly dominate politics in what was once a Southern state. Virginia’s Frederick County, which has had a standing invitation to join West Virginia since 1862, would be a tempting first step.

Rural white voters now find themselves with little protection from state governments dominated by non-white, urban politicians. The older divides between regions and groups of states now pale in comparison to the urban-rural divide in America, which echoes the even more sharp racial divide. White voters in rural Kentucky, Colorado, or Oregon have more in common with each other than they do with non-white city residents in their own states. While white identity remains a forbidden topic in politics, white rural voters will increasingly find themselves unrepresented both in federal and state politics.
In the longer term, coherent, culturally united and majority-white states are a plausible model for secession if the United States collapses. White advocates who believe America is heading for Balkanization should move to secure strongholds that can serve as home bases and rallying points if the country breaks up.
Perhaps no state contributed more to early America than the Old Dominion. Now, those who represent her think all this is shameful. Democrats want to purge the remnants of Virginia’s Confederate past by defunding the Virginia Military Institute, banning Confederate license plates, and removing tax exemptions from groups that honor Southern history. The new governor’s official photo does not even include Virginia’s flag. It’s motto, sic semper tyrannis (thus always [death] to tyrants), probably doesn’t sit well with her.

But real Virginia lives on and, as in the past, its future may lie in secession — secession within the Union, rejoining a state whose leaders seem eager to welcome rural counties. If the real Virginia is to be anything more than a suburb of the federal Leviathan, it should look west. White advocates, conservatives, and anyone who thinks rural voters deserve a voice in their own government should support the effort to turn West Virginia into the real America’s Appalachian redoubt.
