A young French nationalist is unlikely to survive after being ambushed and brutally beaten by a mob of Antifa militants in a savage attack being condemned as a “lynching” in France.
The 23-year-old mathematics student, identified only as Quentin D so far, is in an induced coma after suffering a brain haemorrhage from being knocked to the ground and kicked “with extreme violence” by the crowd of 30 to 40 far-left extremists in the city of Lyon on Friday evening.
Family and friends said his condition was “hopeless”, and that “if he survives, it would be a miracle and he would suffer irreversible after-effects”, Le Figaro reported.
Quentin was among about 15 young men providing informal security to right-wing feminist organisation Collectif Némésis, which held a peaceful demonstration with a banner saying “Islamo-leftists out” near a conference by far-left Member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan.
Collectif Némésis said in a statement translated to English that Quentin’s attackers were wearing reinforced gloves and armed with pepper spray, and kicked him after his head had struck the pavement when he was knocked to the ground, and identified one as belonging to violent anti-fascist group The Young Guard.
The group said Quentin had been declared “in a state of brain death”, and that “last rites were administered to him by a priest”.
Videos shared on social media of far-left violence on the night show a small group of women being surrounded and attacked, and another woman being put in a headlock and thrown to the ground.
Le Figaro journalist Paul Sugy wrote on X that witnesses told him media reports of “clashes” were false, and that the smaller right-wing group was ambushed, chased and “lynched” by the masked Antifa group, and confirmed the attackers were wearing “knuckle-duster gloves”.

He later shared a statement from Quentin’s family and lawyer who also refuted claims the injuries were suffered in a “brawl” and said the young man was non-violent and had no criminal record.
The lawyer, Fabien Rajon, said “young Quentin was neither a security guard nor a member of any security service” and had “always defended his beliefs non-violently”, France 24 reported.
“The theory of a simple ‘brawl’ between two rival groups does not appear to correspond to the reality of the events,” Mr Rajon said.
“It seems more likely to have been a gratuitous lynching by several individuals, outnumbering and armed, who relentlessly attacked the isolated victim.”
The attack has sparked calls from right-wing political figures to declare leftist militant groups terrorist organisations, and MEP Sarah Knafo shared a photo on X of Ms Hassan with far-left MP Raphaël Arnault with members of The Young Guard Lyon captioned “the far left kills”.
National Rally president Jordan Bardella said “the impunity of the far left must end”, and Marine Le Pen wrote that “given the gravity of the threats and the clearly manifested criminal intentions, the government must consider these militias as terrorist groups”.
The Patriots party leader Florian Philippot described the attack as an “assassination”, and called on the government to investigate links between Antifa groups and far-left billionaires.
Ms Hassan denied any links to the attackers, said her security was not involved, and said “those responsible for this violence must be held accountable as soon as possible so that justice can be done”.
