After a meeting at the White House between German Chancellor Merz and U.S. President Trump, Merz posted a message of solidarity on X. However, Merz’s conduct during the meeting was widely panned by the German media, which is widely seen as anti-Trump.
“We are on the same page: This terrible regime in Tehran must go. We will talk about the day after. And we must talk about Ukraine. We want an end to these wars,” he wrote, accompanying a video of the two leaders welcoming each other cordially.

Some German media, however, were displeased with Merz for failing to defend Spain in the face of Trump’s criticism for Madrid’s lack of support for the attacks on Iran.
According to Der Spiegel, as cited by Do Rzeczy, Merz remained silent as Trump criticized Spain. When finally questioned by a journalist, Merz stated that the government in Madrid should present “convincing arguments” on the matter.
According to the German weekly, this was a serious political blunder.
“Merz went to Washington to please Trump – and he succeeded. However, in the eyes of world public opinion, he disappointed Spain, a partner in the European Union,” wrote Der Spiegel. The newspaper emphasized that the chancellor could have at least tried to change the subject or made it clear that economic threats against one EU country were a blow to the entire community. Instead, according to the newspaper, he gave the impression of a politician unwilling to oppose the American president.
Trump also announced the possibility of cutting trade ties with Spain after Madrid refused to use joint military bases for operations against Iran. Spain condemned the military actions by the United States and Israel, pointing to the need to respect international law.
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stated that bases located on Spanish territory cannot be used for activities inconsistent with the UN Charter. The European Commission responded to Washington’s threats, with spokesman Olof Gill assuring that Brussels is ready to defend the interests of member states.
“The Commission will ensure the full protection of the European Union’s interests. We stand in full solidarity with all member states and their citizens,” Gill said.
