Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó have successfully negotiated with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the release of two ethnic Hungarian prisoners of war being held in Russia.
Szijjártó posted on social media, explaining that both men, appearing to be advanced in age, had been forcibly conscripted to the front by Ukrainian recruiters against their will.
“Two Hungarian prisoners of war from Transcarpathia have been released following our talks in Moscow with President Putin. The two men reportedly hold both Ukrainian and Hungarian citizenship and had been forcibly conscripted before being sent to the front. Many ethnic Hungarians from Transcarpathia have been forcibly drafted into the Ukrainian army. Many have fallen, many are missing, and some have ended up in Russian captivity. We will continue our efforts to assist those affected.”

He also published videos on his Facebook account, with one showing the foreign minister greeting the two men, asking how they were, promising them they would be home soon, and that they would talk more during the flight.

“Perfect,” one of the men responded, after being told on the plane that they would be home in five or.six hours. The foreign minister then informed them that they would be served something delicious to eat, and they would be home soon after that.
“Great! Sir, thank you very much!” the man replied, shaking hands with Szijjártó.
In a separate video after landing, the foreign minister made it clear that Putin had asked for nothing in return. Instead, this was a gesture by Putin as a result of over a decade of “rational” foreign policy formulated with “two feet on the ground.”
