Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó told press in Budapest yesterday that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is taking on a central role in Hungary’s parliamentary elections next month, as he seeks to oust Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The foreign minister added that there is continuous consultation between Volodymyr Zelensky and the Tisza Party, led by Péter Magyar, and they are coordinating their activities to help get Magyar into power.
“His ambition is to form the next Hungarian government, which is why he wants to remove Prime Minister Viktor Orbán from the way,” he said, as quoted by Magyar Nemzet.
As Remix News has reported, Orbán and his family have had their lives directly threatened by Zelensky and another former Security Services (SBU) official in recent days. At the same time, the European Union, who has made it clear they too would prefer a Magyar-led Hungary, actually honoring Zelensky with Europe’s top award for his commitment to “the EU’s fundamental values - respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality and the rule of law.”
“The death threat addressed to him is unacceptable and goes beyond the bounds of any cultured and civilized discussion. The fact that Zelensky has sent his thugs out in public, who are now threatening the prime minister’s family, also shows Ukrainian intervention at all costs,” Szijjártó told press, adding that threatening children over a political dispute is terribly uncouth, uncivilized, and uncultured.
In an update from HIrado, the threats from the former lieutenant general and SBU head, Hryhoriy Omelchenko, also included particularly violent language. “We will tear out your stinking tongue and throw it to the dogs. Your neo-Nazi blood will flow into the Danube faster than Moscow oil through the Friendship Pipeline,” Omelchenko reportedly said.
“I would like to make it clear to everyone that we, Hungarians, cannot be blackmailed. Hungary will not give up the representation of its interests, it will not give up its sovereignty, we will not allow the country to go to war, so I ask everyone to stand up for Hungary’s sovereignty, peace and security, and on Sunday everyone should be there at the Peace March, where we can show together that there is no blackmail that Hungary would back down from, the Hungarian foreign minister continued, inviting people to the Peace March this Sunday, on the occasion of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848.
Szijjártó also addressed the ongoing efforts by both Hungary and Slovakia to get Zelensky to reopen the Druzhba (Friendship) pipeline, via which both countries received exemptions ot continue receiving much-needed crude oil. But Kyiv has denied any official status of a delegation sent to verify the condition of the pipeline, with Zelensky admitting he will only reopen when Hungary pulls its veto of the EU’s €90 billion loan package for Ukraine, and has, in the meantime, started to attack the TurkStream pipeline as well.
“We asked for the opportunity for official meetings, as this delegation went to see for itself the condition of the Friendship oil pipeline […] The Friendship oil pipeline is suitable for transportation, it is only because of Zelensky’s political decision that oil transportation to Hungary has not resumed. The Ukrainians are not satisfied with an oil blockade, they want to subject Hungary to a complete energy blockade, which is why they have repeatedly attacked the Turkish Stream gas pipeline, which brings natural gas to Hungary,” the FM stated.
He added that if the Ukrainians were able to put Hungary under a gas blockade in addition to oil, it would mean that the utility costs of families here in Hungary would immediately increase threefold, since the basis for the reduction in utility costs is cheap Russian oil and gas.
Szijjártó also addressed the tens of millions of cash and gold being transported through Hungary to Ukraine, which has raised numerous questions, given the corruption scandals surrounding Zelensky and his close associates.
“It is clear that the Ukrainian reactions that have been made so far show that they definitely want to hide the purpose of the hundreds of millions of dollars and euros moved in Hungary, hide the recipients and hide what this huge amount of cash was intended or intends to be used for here in Hungary,” he told press.
“One does not have to be a conspiracy theorist to associate in one thought the continuous Ukrainian intention to intervene, the statement of the Tisza Party chairman regarding the 20 billion forint campaign, and the transportation of these hundreds of millions of euros and dollars to Hungary. We hope that in the absence of Ukrainian answers, the Hungarian authorities will soon uncover the reasons behind the gold convoy,” Szijjártó concluded.
As pointed out by political analyst Dániel Deák, Péter Magyar has previously said several times that he needs at least 20 billion forints for his election campaign, and now, the Hungarian authorities have seized cash and gold from the Ukrainian shipment in the tens of billions, writes Origo. Although there is no proven connection, the Hungarian government continues to investigate the suspicious transferring of millions of euros in banknotes and gold by Ukrainian authorities through Hungarian territory.
