Hamburg school stabbing leaves boy unable to speak or breathe independently as Gaza suspect remains in custody

A 13-year-old boy stabbed outside a school in Hamburg may never be able to speak or breathe independently again, with doctors warning he could remain permanently dependent on care following the attack.

The 13-year-old schoolboy was critically injured in a knife assault in late March outside his school in the Groß Flottbek area of the German port city. A Syrian boy was initially arrested and released, before a 15-year-old from Gaza was arrested and remains in custody.

According to Bild, the victim remains in a coma, and medics fear the damage caused by the attack could leave him unable to live independently for the rest of his life.

Remix News initially reported that the incident began with a series of insults before turning into a physical confrontation between the victim and the Gaza migrant teen. During the altercation, the attacker, identified as Omar A., allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the younger student before fleeing the scene.

Emergency responders treated the victim at the scene for severe injuries. The knife is believed to have pierced the victim’s heart and liver, triggering massive blood loss. Paramedics were forced to resuscitate the boy before he was rushed to the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf for emergency surgery.

Although surgeons were able to stabilize him, doctors now believe the long-term prognosis is bleak. A nerve may have been damaged in the attack, while prolonged oxygen deprivation caused by blood loss is thought to have led to serious brain injury.

The suspect from Gaza was arrested shortly after a large-scale police operation. A second 15-year-old, reported to be Syrian, was also detained but released the same day.

Omar A. remains in custody on suspicion of attempted manslaughter and aggravated assault. Bild reports he was already known to police for previous violent offenses. It is unclear why he remained at liberty to inflict further violence at the school.

The suspect’s mother told the German tabloid newspaper that her son had been traumatized after fleeing Gaza and is undergoing treatment. He now appears to have inflicted further trauma upon others.

Police have indicated that the victim and suspects were known to one another and that there had been prior disputes, though investigators have not confirmed a definitive motive. The weapon used in the attack has not yet been recovered despite a wide-scale police search on the school premises.

Following the attack, several students have required psychological support from counsellors, and additional staff and security have been deployed on the school grounds as a precaution.
