An Aussie dad has shared his shock and disgust after finding human waste, toilet paper and wet wipes strewn all over a popular tourist spot in New South Wales.
Emergency rescue worker and father-of-two Nathan Mas-Stephens shared a photo of the mess left at Wolgan Gap Lookout near Lithgow on social media last week, along with other images and video of a trashed campsite with a fire still burning.
“An absolute cracker of a place… but honestly, it was rough. Used toilet paper, wet wipes scattered everywhere, and so much human poop on the rocks that the local wombat gave up trying to compete,” he wrote.
“With roads improving and new tracks being built, it’s exciting to see these areas becoming more accessible. More people get to experience how good this place is.
“But that accessibility comes with a flip side. Places that once took effort to reach are now a quick stop off the side of the road. In, out, and onto the next spot… without much thought for what’s left behind.”
Mr Mas-Stephens also said that he couldn’t believe a group of campers had left an active fire, calling it “next level”.
“I love that people are getting out and enjoying these places. I really do. But I can’t wrap my head around how someone can leave a site like this,” he wrote.
“NPWS signs torn down, unopened alcohol left behind, gas canisters scattered around. It just doesn’t make sense.
“We did what we could. Put the fire out and cleaned up a bit of the mess.”
He also said he tried to contact the National Parks and Wildlife Service at Lithgow but was automatically transferred, put on hold, and then the line dropped out.
It comes amid a growing problem Australia-wide with illegal dumping and public defecation, with a lagoon facility in Queensland recently creating a new public awareness campaign asking visitors to the popular tourist destination to use toilets.
