An 8-year-old Italian boy was savagely beaten with an iron bar and left severely disfigured after an attack from foreign youths during the victim’s own birthday party in a park in the Fidene suburb of Rome. Despite the severe attack, the three youths will not face any criminal charges.
The suspects are brothers from the Roma community, aged 7, 9 and 11, according to Italian media.
The Italian child was raced to the hospital after the attack on Sept. 12 and underwent emergency surgery, which means his life is no longer in danger. However, the young boy is reportedly disfigured from several facial fractures and will require multiple reconstructive surgeries to repair his shattered face.
“We heard a scream in the park. The party was almost over, and we were cleaning up. One of the children had been punched and hit with an iron rod in his face by three Roma kids,” said Luigi Pascucci, head of the Association of Magnolia Park.
The 8-year-old boy was celebrating his birthday with his friends in the park when the three siblings insulted and beat the victim, reports Italian news outlet Corriere Della Sera.
The parents of the victim were speaking with the parents of the Roma boys when the attack began. The suspects have been detained, but due to their extremely young age, they cannot be held criminally responsible.
“Nothing like this had ever happened,” said the Councilor for the Environment of the Municipality, Matteo Zocchi.
“I was the one who called the ambulance and the police,” adds Pascucci, in a long post on social media. “Given the severity of the wounds from the blows which, according to the doctors, were inflicted with inhuman violence, the little boy underwent surgery and will have to repeat many operations in the future to reconstruct his face.”
The child was discharged on Saturday morning.
Regarding the three Roma brothers, Pascucci adds that they “were recognized by the other children from the photos shown by the policemen.”
The iron bar used in the attack has also been recovered by police. Authorities are looking to see whether the parents can be charged, as they were present during the attack in the park.
At the very least, the children may be taken from the parents, with authorities starting family checks and involving social services.
However, none of that will ever repair the trauma suffered by the 8-year-old Italian boy, whose birthday party became the location of his life-changing injuries.
The residents of that area mainly reported thefts to us, but episodes of aggression like these had never occurred,” said the mayor of the III municipality, President Paolo Emilio Marchionne. “That is an area that has always been very popular where children’s parties are often organized: the association provides tables and chairs for events; there is also a vegetable garden. In short, it’s a place that is usually under control, and apart from a few small thefts, there have never been violent events.”
Meanwhile, another unbelievable explosion of violence from ethnic minorities, who have foreign status in Italy, has led to outrage from the right.
“It is unacceptable that a moment of joy like a birthday turns into an act of violence. We need zero tolerance towards such behavior and a concrete commitment to the supervision of our parks and to education in respect from a young age,” demands the group leader of the Brothers of Italy in the municipality, Manuel Bartolomeo.
