A Syrian teenager living in Austria was free to walk from the courtroom on Tuesday, despite being convicted of shoving an e-scooter ride onto the train tracks in Korneuburg, Lower Austria, earlier this year.
The 15-year-old suspect was found guilty of robbery, assault, and theft, pertaining to an incident on April 27, when the boy suddenly pushed another teen onto the tracks. The victim, fortunately, escaped with cuts and bruises in what could have been a far more severe incident.
The accused had claimed in court that he had been insulted by the victim, reportedly being called a “junkie and a bum” prior to the attack. However, surveillance footage shown at the trial appeared to debunk claims of provocation.
In mitigation, the Syrian attempted to explain his behavior by blaming his health, telling Vienna’s regional court, “My blood sugar was high. That always makes me aggressive.”
Presumably, his blood sugar was also high ahead of another attack earlier this year, in which he attacked a caregiver at his shared accommodation and robbed another teenager of his cell phone, shoes, and T-shirt. In another incident cited by Heute, the Syrian youth threatened another resident, telling him, “Give me those things, or you’ll bleed right here.”
Despite the multitude of offenses and the potential severity of the train tracks incident, the boy was handed a suspended custodial sentence of 20 months, along with one month of unconditional imprisonment. As that time had already been served in pre-trial detention, he walked free from the court hearing.
When asked by the presiding judge how he would handle his sugar rushes in the future, the teen replied, “Go to the hospital, or something.”
