El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has struck back, banning such terms in all 5,100 public schools, effective immediately, as announced Thursday.
The directive, issued by Education Minister Karla Trigueros, targets words like “amigue” (friend, gender-neutral), “compañere” (colleague, gender-neutral), “niñe” (child, gender-neutral), “todos y todas” (all, inclusive of both genders), “alumn@” (student, gender-neutral), “jóvenxs” (youths, gender-neutral), and “nosotrxs” (we, gender-neutral).

These terms, labelled “linguistic deformations” tied to gender ideology, are now forbidden in classrooms, materials, and official documents.
“With this measure, we protect early childhood, children, and adolescents from ideological interference that could affect their comprehensive development,” Trigueros stated.
The policy aims to uphold standard Spanish, shielding students from external influences.
It extends to books, content, and administrative offices, reinforcing a broader push for structure, including recent rules on discipline, courtesy, and uniforms.
Critics, like the Salvadoran Teachers’ Front, decry this measure as “militarisation” that stifles open learning.
Bukele’s shift is notable; he once supported LGBTI rights in 2019 but ordered gender perspective to be removed from textbooks in 2024.
His popularity, fuelled by a fierce anti-gang campaign slashing violence rates, overshadows concerns from human rights groups about mass arrests ensnaring innocents.
Bukele’s ban of gender “inclusive” language underscores a global clash over language and ideology in education, echoing debates in U.S. schools about parental rights and curriculum control.
