At a Balloon Release to Honor Life of Black Homicide Victim in Almost All-Black North St. Louis, Four Black People Shot

So a balloon release to celebrate the life and memory of a black homicide victim in St. Louis ends with, more black gun violence. [1 dead; 4 shot during balloon release for homicide victim, Fox2Now.com, October 8, 2025]:

ST. LOUIS – District 5 Officers from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) are investigating a deadly shooting that left four injured and one person dead Wednesday evening.

According to police, the shooting happened in the 5900 block of Wells, located in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood. Mitch McCoy, SLMPD spokesperson said the shooting happened during a balloon release for a homicide victim.

“There was a balloon release tonight when shots were fired,” McCoy said. “Multiple people were injured by gunfire.”

{snip}

Due to so many people at the balloon releasing event, police are unable to identify a person of interest at this time. The victims are all males; their ages range between 19 and early 30s.

The Hamilton Heights community in St. Louis is 92.8% black. No one needs to feign shock or horror that a balloon release to honor the life of a black homicide in St. Louis ended with five black people shot and one black person dead.

A mere 2.8 miles away rests the Shelley House at 4600 Labadie Avenue in North St. Louis… so much of American History is captured in this small section of St. Louis that’s now almost exclusively African in America and a reminder of exactly the type of community White people long ago plotted to protect their posterity from being around.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki have both recovered after atom bombs were dropped on the respective Japanese cities in August of 1945; North St. Louis could be a flourishing community for American families, but as long as Africans in America reside there, you’ll get stories of food deserts, failing schools, and “shots rang out” at a black family reunion picnic, a football game or even a balloon release for a black homicide victim.

We don’t have to live this way.
