Germany: Nearly 64,000 Women Were Victims of Sexual Violence in 2024 Alone

Data presented by the German government shows that 63,977 women were victims of sexual violence in 2024 alone, and the perpetrators were disproportionately foreigners.

In fact, 35 percent of all perpetrators were foreign nationals, despite making up just 15 percent of the German population, according to government data released as a result of an inquiry from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the Bundestag.

In addition, the data shows that women were the victims of over 265,000 physical assaults and more than 155,000 crimes against their personal freedom.

Approximately 12,600 women with German citizenship were the victims of sexual violence perpetrated by those who were not German citizens. In 4,000 of those cases, the perpetrator was an asylum seeker, someone with protected status, or someone with tolerated status.

Syrians, Afghans, and Turks stuck out in the statistics, with 1,530 Syrian suspects recorded as committing sexual violence, 1,063 Afghans, and 1,059 Turks.

Data over 10 years

In addition to the AfD’s request for information above, another request also revealed other shocking figures.

This data shows 135,000 crimes by Syrian suspects since 2015 — one every 39 minutes.

The data, obtained by Freilich magazine, also shows large numbers of victims of crimes committed by suspects from other countries of origin, including 82,960 linked to Afghanistan, 69,946 to Iraq, 39,918 to Morocco, and 32,383 to Algeria. Altogether, more than 460,000 crimes were recorded in the 10-year period involving suspects from the 10 main countries of origin: Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Morocco, Algeria, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, and Eritrea.

AfD co-leader Alice Weidel said in a press release that the figures show “the government’s failure in migration and security policy.” She stated, “More than half of all women in Germany no longer feel safe in public spaces. This alarming figure is further proof of the government’s failure. Between 2015 and 2024, 135,668 Germans were victims of crimes committed by suspected Syrian perpetrators. This development is not only extremely alarming but also the result of government mismanagement and uncorrected political misjudgments.”

Data does not include immigration background of suspects

However, this data does not tell the whole story. There are millions of Germans in the country with dual citizenship, and despite these citizens also committing crimes, they are only counted as German in the crime statistics at the federal level. Furthermore, there are millions of people with a migration background who only have German citizenship, and despite proposals from the AfD, their migration background is not recorded.

There is only one German state that is taking a different path. North Rhine-Westphalia started recording dual citizens in the crime statistics, a move harshly protested by the left. Neighboring Denmark goes a step further and records the migration background of all suspects, which the country argues can give a fuller picture of integration efforts.

One measure used to ascertain the foreign background of suspects is the request for first names, which the AfD has done in North Rhine-Westphalia. There, half of all gang rape suspects are foreign nationals, but when the names of suspects are revealed, it becomes clear that approximately 75 percent of all rape cases involve a foreign national or German citizen with a migrant background.
