Italy: Tunisian migrant arrested for assaulting father and attempting to kidnap one-year-old in Padua

A 22-year-old Tunisian national living in Italy was arrested on Thursday after punching the father of a one-year-old girl and attempting to walk away with the stroller containing the baby.

The incident occurred in Piazzale Stazione in Padua. According to police reports and local media, the child’s father, a 21-year-old Romanian citizen, was with his daughter outside the train station when the attacker approached him without warning and struck him in the face.

The man immediately seized the stroller and tried to flee toward Viale della Pace. The child, who had been asleep, remained strapped into the seat.

The father followed the suspect at a distance and stayed in contact with the police, describing the attacker’s movements. When officers arrived, they found the 22-year-old standing beside the stroller and the child frightened but unharmed. He was detained and taken to police headquarters.

During transport, the suspect resisted arrest, kicking and punching an officer, who later required medical treatment. Police say the man continued his aggressive behavior inside the patrol vehicle, attempting to cling to the interior to prevent officers from removing him.

As reported by Padova Oggi, the Tunisian citizen, resident in the province of Padua and in Italy for about a year, was arrested for resisting and injuring public officials. He was also charged with assaulting the child’s father and attempting to kidnap the girl.

His arrest was validated in a summary hearing on Friday, and he was placed under a precautionary order requiring him to remain in his municipality of residence.

Citing the seriousness of the case, Padua’s Police Commissioner Marco Odorisio has ordered the initiation of procedures to revoke the man’s residence permit, according to the official police report. An instruction for a mandatory expulsion order from the municipality has also been issued.

The attempted kidnapping is the latest in a spate of similar incidents in recent months.

In a separate incident on Oct. 19 in Bologna, police arrested a 17-year-old Gambian minor after he allegedly attempted to remove a newborn baby from a stroller near the city’s train station. According to reports, the suspect reached into the stroller in the presence of both parents. They intervened immediately, and nearby witnesses helped prevent the abduction.

The baby was unharmed. Police located the suspect minutes later in a nearby park and arrested him after a brief chase. The minor, who lives in a community center for unaccompanied youths, was charged with attempted kidnapping and resisting a public official.

Also in October, Catalan police investigated an attempted kidnapping of an 11-year-old girl in the town of Torelló, north of Barcelona, after four North African men attempted to bundle her into a vehicle as she returned home from her local supermarket.

Similarly, two men, described by media as “North African migrants,” were released on bail pending investigation for allegedly attempting to kidnap a young girl in Córdoba.
