Iraqi handed life sentence for killing estranged wife and mother-of-seven with car in Germany

An Iraqi national has been sentenced to life imprisonment in Germany for murdering his estranged wife by chasing her across a sidewalk at 71 kilometers per hour and ramming her with his car in a suspected honor-related homicide.

The 37-year-old mother of seven died instantly in the May 12 attack in Varel, in the Friesland district of northern Germany. The verdict, delivered by the Oldenburg Regional Court, is not yet legally binding due to the possibility of appeal.

According to the court’s findings as reported by Bild, the woman had been walking along the sidewalk with headphones on when her 38-year-old husband accelerated directly toward her, striking her with such force that she was thrown several meters into the air.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but she died before they could provide aid.

At the start of the trial, the defendant insisted the collision had been an accident, claiming that his mobile phone had fallen and, while trying to retrieve it, he inadvertently jerked the steering wheel and pressed the accelerator, just happening to strike his estranged wife. Judges rejected this account, stating that the evidence overwhelmingly contradicted any notion of an accident.

The court ruled that he acted out of jealousy and contempt, concluding that he felt his honor had been violated because his wife wanted a divorce.

RTL reported at the time of the incident that the couple had been living separately, and a restraining order had already been issued against the defendant, prohibiting him from contacting his wife.

The couple’s seven minor children are now under the care of the local youth welfare office.

In the aftermath of the killing, a GoFundMe page was set up to provide financial security for the children.

“Seven children are left behind, not only having lost their mother but also being left without parental care,” its creator, Sarah Weeken, wrote. “The family has been torn apart in an instant. The children, aged between 5 and 16, are now struggling with immeasurable pain, loss, and uncertainty about their future,” she added.

At the time of writing, it had raised €7,700 of its €20,000 target.
