A 56-year-old man has died two weeks after being stabbed at the Perrache tram station in Lyon’s 2nd arrondissement, according to French media.
The attack occurred on Friday, Nov. 14, at around 9:30 p.m. According to police and local reporting from Actu Lyon, the victim collapsed onto the tram tracks after being stabbed at least once in front of multiple witnesses.
Emergency services treated the man at the scene before taking him to Édouard-Herriot Hospital, where he remained in critical condition. Authorities confirmed over the weekend that he died from his injuries.
Witnesses described the aftermath as deeply distressing. One person told local media, “We saw a body near the tram.” Another described the situation as “a nightmare scene,” recalling the confusion as passengers and bystanders tried to understand what had happened.
A suspect was apprehended shortly after the attack through witness accounts and CCTV footage. According to the Lyon prosecutor’s office, the man — identified as a 32-year-old homeless individual originally from Guadeloupe — was placed in police custody but later transferred to a psychiatric unit after his condition was deemed medically incompatible with detention.
Following the victim’s death, he was arrested again on Monday, and the investigation was reclassified as a homicide case.
Early information indicates that the victim was stabbed in the chest with a barbecue fork in a pedestrian tunnel used by tram lines.
The exact motive behind the attack remains unknown.
Remarkably, a very similar story just occurred in Paris as well, involving a violent migrant from Guadeloupe, who slashed two victims in their faces, carving the “Joker smile” into each victim.
Young Killian and his girlfriend have spoken to French media about the terrifying incident from earlier this month.
“We escaped death – both of us.”

“We now avoid going out much, in order to stay safe.”
“We always have this fear: Could we run into someone like him again?”
“Now, I can’t sleep without crying.”
