UK Justice Secretary David Lammy has confirmed that a further 12 prisoners were mistakenly released over the past month, with two still at large.
He declined to give details of the individuals or the prisons involved, citing police operational concerns.
The latest figures come on top of 91 accidental releases recorded between April and October, bringing the total for the year so far to 262—more than double the 115 reported in 2023–24.
David Lammy told the BBC: “I said to Parliament a few weeks ago, I released data at that point, and there had been 91 releases in error up to that point, there have been 12 since then, two are currently at large.”
Lammy said he was “pleased that the trend is downwards” following early system improvements, but he has faced criticism, including calls to resign, after the mistaken release of Ethiopian national Hadush Kebatu, jailed in September for sexual assault.
