A Renault workshop owner in Romagnieu, Isère, who defended his property against intruders with a firearm, is in police custody, as well as his son. They are charged with armed violence after allegedly opening fire on four burglars, and the charges have sparked outrage in their small village.
It was in fact the second burglary in 24 hours, as the previous night, the thieves had stolen car parts.
53-year-old Didier claims he fired warning shots to scare off the intruders. While he and his 23-year-old son were held for 48 hours by police, the burglars were immediately released.
The village is not happy about the police response.
“It’s a scandal! Are we supposed to let ourselves be robbed without resistance? Drop our pants and wait? It’s disgusting! Self-defense or not – these guys have no right to break into someone else’s workshop, home, or anywhere else. There’s no reason for us to put up with it. Didier is a good guy!” – said 80-year-old Roger.
Residents are collecting signatures in defense of the detainee.
The incident took place near midnight on Dec. 1, according to BFMTV, citing a story out of Dauphiné Libéré, when four individuals broke into a garage in Romagnieu to burglarize it. Once inside, and having tripped the alarm, the owner fired on them with a shotgun, wounding two of the intruders.
One of them, a 15-year-old minor, was hit by bullets in the chest, but his life is not in danger.
A judicial investigation has been opened against the garage owner, as well as his 24-year-old son, who was present at the scene of the incident and has also been charged. They have both been placed under judicial supervision.
The four burglars, aged 15, 17, 18, and 21, are all from the Ain department, a source at the prosecutor’s office told BFMTV. Three of them have been taken into custody for “attempted burglary.” The investigation into their crime is ongoing.
According to local residents, the garage has been targeted by thieves several times in recent years, even just the day before this incident, driving the owner to finally take action to protect his business, reports L’Independant.
The French police issued a claim that “the right to necessary defense does not cover excessive use of force.”
