Victoria to crack down on social media anonymity to combat anti-Semitism

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has unveiled a new legislative crackdown on anti-Semitism in the wake of the Bondi Islamic terrorist attack, including new laws forcing social media companies to identify users.

The Labor government’s five-point proposal builds on new anti-vilification laws set to take effect next year, and was announced on Monday as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese proposed tougher federal “hate speech” laws and a plan to ban “hate organisations”.

The first point – stronger “hate speech” laws – includes making social media companies liable if they do not identify anonymous users for prosecution under the new anti-vilification laws, and the removal of a requirement for Director of Public Prosecution consent for criminal vilification charges.

The second point gives the Chief Commissioner of Police special new powers to stop or move on public protests following designated terrorist events, similar to new laws which passed the NSW lower house on Monday night.

The third is a review of gun laws, the fourth is the appointment of a new commissioner to implement an anti-extremism strategy, and the fifth point is a long-term goal of “a return to a sense of normality for members of Victoria’s Jewish community” with the help of a “council of eminent Victorians”.

Ms Allan said Victoria was already home to Australia’s toughest “hate speech” laws, and the five-point plan would “make them even stronger” in order to protect the Jewish community.

“We have a profound sense of duty to stand with the Jewish community in its darkest hour,” she said.

“Today I am announcing the five next major steps to combat anti-Semitism and keep people safe. And I am committing to the long-term. This historic challenge needs serious, constant, accountable, long-term – multi-year – intervention. I am committing to it.

“Anti-Semitism is unique – but its solutions benefit everyone. Multicultural Victoria knows it. A Victoria free of anti-Semitism is a state that’s safer, kinder and gentler for all our families and communities.”
