Pacific Islander sex offender jailed for just one year for grabbing child and punching dad

A Pacific Islander man has been jailed for just 12 months for attacking a father who intervened when the registered sex offender grabbed his young son on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Kitione Nasalo, 44, also known as Kitchie Knoss among 20 other aliases, pleaded guilty in December to two counts of common assault and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm after police withdrew charges of stalking/intimidation and affray over the disturbing incident on October 10 last year.

Nasalo, who was placed on the Child Protection Register until 2033 for sexually touching a child and was recently convicted of failing to apply with his reporting obligations, was given a 12-month aggregate sentence in Manly Local Court on Wednesday, the Northern Beaches Advocate reported.

Magistrate Daniel Reiss noted in sentencing that Nasalo was known to police in Queensland and the Northern Territory, and the court heard he has criminal convictions for assault, drug possession, trespass and driving offences.

According to police facts, the father, 71, and son went for ice cream at Mr Gelato in Collaroy just before 8pm, and when the father went into the store Nasalo asked the boy: “Is that guy a paedophile?”

When the boy said “no, that’s my dad”, Nasalo asked the boy “where did he touch you?” and then took him by the shoulders and forcibly walked him away from the gelato shop and around the corner.

The boy’s father then ran to intervene, but Nasalo let go of the child, said “you’re a paedophile”, and punched the father in the face, leaving him with a cut above his left eye.

Both men fell to the ground and the father’s phone was damaged and his shirt torn. The 12-year-old told witnesses it was his father being attacked, and Nasalo got onto a bus as police arrived at the scene.

He was arrested in the back seat and admitted drinking a six-pack of beer before the incident.

Nasalo told the court he “was an idiot and had been drunk”, and his lawyer said he had a drinking problem and had relapsed before the attack. She also told the court her client’s reporting breaches were minor, and no illegal material was found when police searched his undeclared social media accounts.

Nasalo will be eligible for release on October 10 this year as his sentence was backdated to the day of his arrest.
