Asylum seekers in Germany opting to return to county of origin jumps by 60% in 2025

Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) in Nuremberg reports that in 2024, 10,358 people opted to return to their country of origin with the help of the German authorities, while for 2025, this figure was significantly higher, 16,576.

“Sixty percent more voluntary returns than in the previous year: this is an important element of change in migration policy,” said Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt.

“The reason for this increase is primarily the end of the civil war in Syria at the end of 2024. This allowed the suspended return program to that country to resume. More than half of the over 6,000 people returning, i.e., 3,678, are Syrian refugees. 2025 also saw an increase of over 1,000 people in voluntary returns to Turkey,” Deutsche Welle points out, which was cited by Do Rzezcy.

At the end of last year, approximately 83.5 million people lived in Germany, a decrease of approximately 100,000. The arrival of immigrants cannot reverse this trend.

According to the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, this was the first decline in the population since 2020. Between 2011 and 2024, with the exception of the pandemic year 2020, the population grew, with the reason being mass immigration.

Now the trend has reversed, with net immigration cited as the cause of the decline. In 2025, 220,000-260,000 more people will have arrived in Germany than emigrated. This means that net migration was significantly lower (by approximately 40 percent) than the previous year, when 430,000 more people arrived in Germany than emigrated.
