Far-left activists are spreading a wild conspiracy theory that police officers in Sydney and Melbourne are growing moustaches to show support for prominent nationalist figure Thomas Sewell.
Photos of uniformed officers with similar facial hair to Mr Sewell at protests against Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s visit to Australia this week sparked baseless claims on social media that the police have been “infiltrated” by the far-right.
Noticer News does not suggest the conspiracy theory is true, only that it is being pushed in far-left circles and secret encrypted app chat groups in response to the police protest crackdown and the recent disbanding of the National Socialist Network.
“Now we have the cops in Melbourne with those moustaches. Is it a secret code of support for the neo-Nazi Sewell?” asked one pro-Palestine activist in a popular X post.
“Victoria Police today protecting Herzog. Is anyone else noticing anything? I thought the NSN had formally disbanded?” wrote another alongside a photo of a group of police officers with moustaches.
“What’s with the dodgy moustache they’ve all got. Moonlighting with Nazis perhaps. Bit of a Sewell wannabe vibe going on there,” said a “long Covid” activist in a similar post.
“That type of moustache is a symbol… thanks to Sewell we all know what it means now. Armbands and flags are outlawed so the only option is to grow your allegiance under your nose,” and another X user.
“Okay the bicycle cop [allegedly] bashing someone for no reason here has a moustache and seemingly so did every fucken twenty- or thirty something White guy copper there tonight. It’s fucking weird, they’re genuinely all aesthetically presenting as Thomas Sewell now,” a post about the Sydney protest read.
“NSW Police neo-Nazi lookalike contest,” read a post written by a “transgender” unionist with hundreds of likes and reposts comparing a police photo to one of Mr Sewell.
“Plenty of cops sporting Thomas Sewell moustaches in Sydney last night. Is he a hero for cops?” said another leftist activist.
Others referred to the police facial hair trend as the “new Fasch Tash a la Thomas Sewell”, the “fascist tach” and “Hitler moustaches”.
On Facebook a pro-Palestine activist shared photos of the police at the Sydney protest in a post with thousands of likes and comments with the caption: “NSW Police sporting the right-wing Nazi look. Has our police force been infiltrated by the right wing?”
Mr Sewell, who has sported his trademark moustache for more than a year, responded with the cryptic comment “Operation Ronald McDonald” when asked about the conspiracy theory.
