Germany: Syrian arrested for murder after stabbing wife 15 times because she wanted to leave him

A 35-year-old woman was stabbed to death on a street in Hagen on Saturday evening, suffering more than 15 knife wounds, according to police and local media reports. Her 41-year-old Syrian husband has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

Police said officers responded to an emergency call at around 10:30 p.m. in the Remberg district and found the woman lying unconscious between two parked cars on Eickertstrasse. Emergency services began resuscitation efforts at the scene before transporting her to hospital, where she died shortly afterwards as a result of her injuries.

According to Tagesschau and Bild, the woman sustained at least 15 stab wounds to her face, neck, chest, back, and both arms.

Witnesses told Bild they heard screams late in the evening and ran to their windows, reporting that they saw a man chase the woman, push her to the ground, and stab her repeatedly.

Investigators from North Rhine-Westphalia Police launched an immediate manhunt. A police dog was deployed, and officers apprehended the 41-year-old suspect shortly after the attack.

“Officers located a 41-year-old suspect at a bus stop on Feithstrasse and took him into custody,” police spokesman Tim Sendler said. “He is the partner of the 35-year-old woman.”

Police said the suspect was carrying a knife at the time of his arrest, which they believe could be the murder weapon. A judge ordered him remanded in custody on Sunday afternoon. An arrest warrant has been issued.

According to police, the man had previously been known to authorities for domestic violence. In 2024, the woman contacted police and reported that she had suffered domestic abuse for years and had been repeatedly beaten. Officers at the time issued the man with a 10-day restraining order, barring him from returning to the couple’s shared apartment and issuing a formal warning. Police said no further incidents had been reported after that intervention.

According to Welt, the woman had recently wanted to leave her husband. Authorities are also examining why the couple met several kilometers away from their home on the night of the attack.

The couple has five children together, aged between four and 15. “They were found safe and sound by investigators and handed over to the youth welfare office,” police and prosecutors confirmed.

As Welt noted, a report by the Federal Criminal Police Office presented in 2023 by then Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser found that 938 girls and women were victims of attempted or completed homicides that year. Of those, 360 were killed. “Therefore, there was almost a femicide every day in Germany in 2023,” the report stated.

The investigation into the Hagen killing remains ongoing.
