‘We, Poles, love Hungarians, and we hate the war criminal Putin’ – Nawrocki celebrates Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day in Budapest

Polish President Karol Nawrocki visited Budapest to celebrate Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day and meet with top Hungarian officials. The commemoration led to an embarrassing moment for Polish PM Donald Tusk.

A conversation with Prime Minister Orbán was scheduled to last over an hour and took place without media participation, according to Do Rzeczy.

Thanking both Hungary’s president, Tamás Sulyok, and Orbán for “the fruitful discussions,” Nawrocki posted: “We are bound by centuries of shared history and common national heroes. Hungary extended a hand to us when we defended ourselves against Russian Bolshevism in 1920, and we showed them solidarity in 1956 when Kremlin imperialism crushed their freedom.”

“We, Poles, love Hungarians, and we hate the war criminal Putin. Russia will always be a threat to us, Hungary an eternal friend. Long live Poland! God bless the Hungarians!’ he concluded his post.

On Monday, Orbán also welcomed leaders from the Patriots for Europe grouping in the European Parliament as well. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski suggested that the timing of Naworcki’s visit might have been to support Orbán’s election campaign. Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed a similar opinion, speaking of a “fatal mistake” and actions that could weaken the European Union and strengthen Russia. However, the president’s office was clear that this was to celebrate the official day of Hungarian-Polish friendship.

Responding to a reporter’s question about Russia after a press conference with Sulyok, Nawrocki clapped back, stating: “Listen to what the President of Poland is saying. Vladimir Putin is a criminal.”

Tusk addressed the matter, writing on X: “Please don’t shout at journalists. They didn’t get you into this Russian mess.” The head of government’s post, in turn, sparked an immediate reaction from Law and Justice politicians, who defended the president and criticized him, accusing him of hypocrisy and recalling his earlier policy of “resetting” with Russia, with one commenter posting a fun collage of pics of Tusk with Putin.

One commenter on Remix’s own video of the interaction posted a clear photo of Tusk’s past friendship with Putin (also posted by others elsewhere), with the caption referencing the plane crash in Russia that killed the brother of PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński: “President Kaczyński was still lying in the Smolensk mud when Tusk was giving high fives with (P)utin.” PiS has long believed that Tusk and Russia either knew something about the crash or played some part in covering up its cause.
