Moroccan axe attacker in Spanish town leaves 3 injured as suspect hunted down after dramatic manhunt

A Moroccan national armed with an axe injured three people in a random and unprovoked attack in southern Spain on Monday, triggering panic in a small town and a major police operation that ended with his arrest hours later.

The violence unfolded in Montefrío shortly before 10 a.m., when a 45-year-old man allegedly began targeting passersby in a central part of the town near Fuente y Prado Street.

Authorities said the suspect, a Moroccan national who had only recently arrived in the area, acted without any clear motive. Investigators have so far found no indication of a prior dispute with the victims.

According to local police, the first person targeted was an older man walking nearby. The attacker is understood to have lunged at him with the axe, but the man managed to defend himself and escape with minor injuries.

Moments later, two women who had shouted at the attacker were confronted and struck. One suffered a serious head injury and had to be airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in Granada, where she remains in serious condition.

The second woman sustained severe injuries to her hands, with Granada Hoy reporting that one of her fingers was amputated in the attack. She was transported by ambulance for urgent medical treatment.

The suspect fled the scene, sparking a manhunt for the armed man.

A local nursing assistant, Claudia, told the CanarSur broadcaster how she was pushing an elderly woman in a wheelchair around the town when she was approached by the suspect. He reported swore at her and told her not to say anything, before running away.

He then launched the axe at a delivery woman, embedding the weapon in her van.

Local police officers used drones to track the suspect, who was later involved in a car crash during his attempted escape. He was eventually arrested and remanded in custody.

An investigation to ascertain a possible motive remains ongoing.

Commenting on the attack, Santiago Abascal, president of the right-wing Vox party, wrote, “Two women seriously injured and an entire town terrorized. It’s always the same: those who demand them, those who call for them, those who bring them, and those who regularize them are never the ones who suffer them. The invasion kills.”
