A 74-year-old woman has been subjected to an extreme attack, which involved the suspect reportedly torturing and raping the victim in her own home in Romainville, in the Seine-Saint-Denis department outside Paris.
According to police, a hooded man broke into her apartment in the middle of the night and raped her with a stick before subjecting her to prolonged torture. A 25-year-old suspect who identified himself as Algerian was arrested shortly after the rape.
The victim was asleep when the masked suspect entered her home, apparently without forced entry — possibly through an unlocked window.
He then subjected her to “exceptionally savage acts,” according to French news outlet Actu17. Police report the attacker used a stick to carry out the rape, followed by further beatings, humiliations, and prolonged abuse. The elderly woman sustained serious physical and psychological injuries requiring extensive medical and psychological care.
Neighbors alerted police after hearing unusual sounds or muffled cries, but by the time the police arrived, the suspect had already concluded the assault.
Investigators went to work collecting evidence, including DNA, fingerprints, and other materials. Based on this evidence, investigators quickly identified the suspect in the case.
The police arrested the 25-year-old suspect, who told investigators he was Algerian. It appears the police were not yet able to identify the man’s nation of origin independently, which may point to the man being in the country illegally.
The man has been placed in pre-trial detention and charged with rape, torture, and acts of barbarity.
“These attacks on vulnerable elderly people reveal a disturbing drift in violence within our society,” said one source close to the investigation.
Could he be connected to other crimes?
So far, the police have not released any information about the man’s criminal history, but investigators are looking into the possibility that previous similar crimes may be tied to him. In fact, Remix News reported on a very similar case in the nearby neighborhood last year. In that case, an elderly French woman was simply trying to close the window to her apartment when an unidentified individual slipped into her home to rape and rob her in the “sensitive” Mureaux district in Yvelines, outside Paris. The neighborhood is known for its extremely high number of North African residents. So far, no suspect has been arrested in this case, but the police will certainly be examining whether the Algerian in this case has any connection.
Remarkably, Remix News also reported on a number of similar cases from last year. In Paris, 24-year-old migrant Mohammed D. snuck through a window and raped an elderly building caretaker at knifepoint and was sentenced to nine years in prison.
Also last year, an illegal Algerian migrant was arrested for raping an elderly woman in her Paris apartment after offering to help her with her groceries. In addition, an Afghan man was charged with raping an 80-year-old woman to death in the city of Niort in a crime that shocked the entire region.
The elderly being targeted for rape by foreigners in France is nothing new in previous years either, with a wave of such attacks occurring in recent years. In many cases, the victims have been in their 80s, but some have also been in their 90s, and in one case, the victim was 102.
This latest rape case and others have reignited debates about immigration and public safety in Seine-Saint-Denis and in broader France as well. Seine-Saint-Denis is one of France’s most densely populated and multicultural departments. Recently, a new controversial far-left mayor in the department was elected, Bally Bagayoko, who has promised to disarm municipal police despite continued public safety threats.
