Calls have erupted for a boycott of Christopher Nolan’s upcoming The Odyssey film after he revealed black actress Lupita Nyong’o would play Helen of Troy.
The director confirmed this week that Nyong’o was not only cast as Helen of Troy, who is supposed to be the most beautiful woman in the world, but also Helen’s sister Clytemnestra, the wife of Greek hero Agamemnon.
Black rapper Travis Scott is also cast in the US$250 million film as an ancient Greek bard, “transgender” actress Elliot Page has a yet-to-be confirmed role, and mixed-race American actress Zendaya will play the goddess Athena.
“I cast him because I wanted to nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap,” Nolan said about Scott’s casting.
The confirmation that Nyongo will play Helen, who was described by Homer as being White, sparked anger from film fans and history buffs worldwide, many of whom have vowed to boycott the film.

I will not go and see Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey”, not even from a critical perspective.
I am a cinephile, and I know Nolan is an excellent director, but he deserves to be sanctioned.
Anyone who obeys the new woke norms no longer deserves our money.

“As a Greek woman, I cannot stay silent… I owe this to my Ancestors! Boycott Nolan’s The Odyssey that has completely altered Homer’s epic,” read another popular post.
“Helen of Troy, the most beautiful woman in the world, was described by Homer with golden blonde hair, dazzling white skin and divine European beauty that launched a thousand ships. She was a Greek woman, not Sub-Saharan African. This is not representation. This is erasure of Greek and European history and identity.”
“I will not go and see Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, not even from a critical perspective. I am a cinephile, and I know Nolan is an excellent director, but he deserves to be sanctioned,” wrote another X user.
“Anyone who obeys the new woke norms no longer deserves our money. This must become a habit, a trend: these deeply harmful films that degrade our image internationally must fail at the box office.
“Let’s launch this operation: who will NOT go to the cinema to see this spit in the face of our civilisation? Let millions of us boycott it.”
Not one person on the planet actually thinks that Lupita Nyong’o is “the most beautiful woman in the world.” But Christopher Nolan knows that he would be called racist if he gave “the most beautiful woman” role to a white woman. Q: Why is Christopher Nolan like many other directors so keen to race swap white characters?
A: Quotas and awards. pic.twitter.com/vYc4bH1wOy— Alice Smith (@TheAliceSmith) May 12, 2026
Billionaire X owner Elon Musk also criticised the decision, writing “true” in response to a post by political commentator Matt Walsh slamming the casting.
“Not one person on the planet actually thinks that Lupita Nyong’o is ‘the most beautiful woman in the world’. But Christopher Nolan knows that he would be called racist if he gave ‘the most beautiful woman’ role to a White woman,” Walsh wrote.
“Nolan is technically talented but a coward. Too afraid to do anything that even slightly challenges the spirit of the age.”
In response to another post, which stated “Q: Why is Christopher Nolan like many other directors so keen to race swap white characters? A: Quotas and awards”, Musk replied: “He wants the awards.”
The post was referring to new Academy Award rules brought in following the deadly Black Lives Matter riots of 2020 that to win the Oscar for best picture a film must fit a series of antiwhite “representative and inclusion” standards.
