A Pacific Islander man with links to a notorious street gang has been shot dead and four others are in hospital after a mass shooting in southwest Sydney.
Alai Ahio, 28, who has connections to drill rap group One Four and the Mount Druitt-based gang of the same name, died in hospital after at least two men armed with guns and knives launched an attack at a home in Canley Vale on Tuesday night.
Ahio and another man arrived at Liverpool Hospital at 8.30pm where he died, and his 32-year-old companion was treated for a neck wound and is now in a stable condition.
Two other men, aged 22 and 23, turned up at Fairfield Hospital at around the same time in serious conditions, the younger man suffering a shoulder injury and the older man a gunshot wound to the neck.
Then at about 9.50pm, a 19-year-old man arrived at Liverpool Hospital with injuries to his arm, and remains in a stable condition.
Ahio has a “14” tattoo on his neck, and has appeared in photos with OneFour rappers, and was pictured in tribute photos making gang hand signs.
The Pacific Islander drill rap group claim to be separate from the street gang, but rap about gang activity, shootings, stabbings, and violent assaults, and several members, ex-members and associates have been jailed for violent offences, including clashes with other Pacific Islander gangs in western Sydney in recent years.
Fairfield Police Commander Craig Middleton said the attack, which he described as “very brazen and violent”, was believed to be targeted, and police were “aware of some organised crime links”.
The two male attackers are believed to have fled the scene in a white SUV, and Commander Middleton said: “We are doing everything we can with the resources we have available across the south west region. Hopefully we can identify these offenders and arrest them quickly.”
Police are also investigating whether the attack is linked to the Coconut Cartel, a Pacific Islander gang embroiled in an underworld conflict with the Alameddine organsied crime network based around a Lebanese family, The Daily Telegraph reported.
