Italian anti-terrorism police have arrested a 21-year-old man of Moroccan origin after investigators said his online posts praising martyrdom raised fears he could be “immediately and unexpectedly activated.”
Zakaria Ben Haddi, who lives in Vimercate in Brianza, was detained by DIGOS officers at the request of the Milan Prosecutor’s Office. He is accused of international terrorism over alleged social media activity linked to Islamic State propaganda and incitement to martyrdom, according to Il Giornale.
Investigators said the alarm intensified after Ben Haddi allegedly published a series of posts on May 30 praising martyrdom. Prosecutors said the material led them to believe it was “likely” that he could take “immediate and impromptu” action.
La Presse reported how the 21-year-old had also posted messages referring to the May 15 attack in Modena, where Salim El Koudri allegedly drove a car into passersby and injured seven people.
The outlet said Ben Haddi wrote on TikTok the day before his arrest, “Don’t blame me for what I’ll do tomorrow, because I’m doing the right thing.” In a second post, he allegedly added, “Tomorrow, I will make Italy a better place.”
Investigators said Ben Haddi used public Instagram and TikTok profiles to share propaganda videos connected to the jihadist sphere, including material referring to Islamic State and its former leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
The Milan Prosecutor’s Office said the content praised Islamic State attacks “against Christians” and the West more broadly, while also glorifying and encouraging martyrdom.
Prosecutor Alessandro Gobbis has charged Ben Haddi with conspiracy to commit terrorism, including international terrorism, or subversion of the democratic order.
The case is centered on the allegation that his online activity went beyond extremist propaganda and suggested a possible imminent threat.
