Miracle as dog Tank who vanished on drive across outback is saved by truckie

A dog named Tank who went missing while being driven across outback Western Australia has been saved by a passing truck driver.

Tank was being taken to Perth for foster care on Friday when he managed to escape from his crate, and the courier driver only realised when he stopped at the Billabong Roadhouse, a remote fuel stop between Geraldton and Carnarvon.

The three-year-old rescue dog could not be found despite a desperate search, but after his photos were posted on social media he was spotted walking along a desert highway by truck driver Dean Trounson from Russells Transport, who stopped to pick him up.

Natalie Plunkett from Oldies but Goodies Dog Rescue revealed in a post on Facebook on Saturday that Tank had been found and was back on his way to Perth.

“Big shoutout and hug to Dean who was driving his road train and he had heard Tank was missing and as he was driving he said ‘THAT’S TANK’,” she wrote.

“He just called him over pulled his road train to a stop and called Tank over.”

She said Mr Trounson told her: “I found him walking northbound about 50kms south of Carnarvon.”

Ms Plunkett also said she had spoken to the courier company who had explained that the escape was an accident and not negligence, and asked for social media users to stop accusing the driver of being at fault.

The driver also said in a comment on a separate post that Tank broke out of the carrier provided and escaped from under the curtain of the transport truck somewhere between Carnarvon and Billabong Roadhouse.

“I rang and reported the dog missing as soon as it was noticed and also rang the roadhouses to keep a lookout in case he showed up,” he said.

“The rangers in Carnarvon have investigated and viewed footage/data relating to the route and stops taken while transporting the dog and found that at no point did I have a chance to let the dog out enroute.”

Tank is now is foster care in Perth where he is recovering from minor injuries, and a woman who shared a video of herself collecting Tank from Mr Trounson wrote that the truck driver was considering adopting him, but needed to ensure he got along with his other rescue dog.
