Patriots hold rally outside Modi event in Melbourne: ‘Stop Indian invasion’

Patriotic Australians have held a protest against mass immigration from India outside an event for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Melbourne.

The snap demonstration started outside the Department of Home Affairs in Docklands on Thursday afternoon, and dozens of protesters carrying Australian flags then marched to Marvel Stadium where the Melbourne Meets Modi event was being held.

The protesters positioned themselves on the stairs opposite the stadium with banners saying “Modi go home: take the rest with you” and “stop Indian invasion”, while some chanted “you will not replace us”.

Organisers Hugo Lennon and Mitch Hobbs, known as Auspill and Sir Doug online, then delivered speeches while tens of thousands of Indians arrived for the sold-out event with Mr Modi, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan.

“There are 30,000 people in attendance to this rally by foreign leader Narendra Modi. Modi leads a party in India that’s far-right, but Albo doesn’t seem to care. Modi leads a party that’s ethno-nationalist, Albo doesn’t care,” Mr Lennon said in his speech.

“If you’re an Australian and you believe everything Modi believes, but for Australians, they’re trying to outlaw you. If you believe Australia should be for Australians, as Modi believes India should be for Hindu Indians, they want to throw you in jail.”

He went on to highlight that the relationship between Australian and India was based on “people-to-people links”, which he said was resulting in out-of-control mass immigration, and spoke out against plans to create a Little India in the area.

“The only way the Australian government has identified how to increase relations with India, is by turning us into India,” he said.

“The area we are in, Docklands, will soon have a Little India precinct after Modi and Albo meet in there today. They will rename part of Docklands Little India as they continue their policy of turning us into Little India, to curry favour, pun intended, with India.”

About 20 Sikh separatist protesters also protested outside the stadium, as did a small group of human rights activists.

The demonstration came after Mr Lennon heckled Mr Modi in a late-night ambush at his Melbourne hotel, shouting “f*ck India, f*ck Modi” before he was swarmed by nearby police officers.

He then yelled “this is Australia, no more Indians, we don’t want any more migration, this country is for Australians”, before being dragged away.

Record-high immigration from India since Mr Albanese was elected in 2022 pushed the Indian-born resident population up to 971,000 as of June 30 last year, making them the largest foreign-born group for the first time in Australia’s history.

In 2024 it was estimated there were another 200,971 people born in Australia with Indian ancestry, and 113,947 who were born in other countries but have Indian ancestry.
