Frenchman kicked out of his own home by illegal immigrant family he took in

A generous Frenchman who opened his doors to an illegal immigrant family has been forced out of his own home after months of alleged threats, violence and a protracted eviction battle.

Hervé, 56, bought a historic guesthouse in the village of Saint-Juvat, Brittany, in 2019, and spent several years renovating the former inn to turn it into both a home for himself and low-cost accommodation for travellers and people facing hardship.

In 2025, a Mauritian couple with two young daughters asked to pitch a tent in Hervé’s garden over the winter, and moved by their situation he allowed them to stay in the guesthouse at a low rate, Remix News reported.

“I believe opening your door to others is something fundamental,” he said.

“Children sleeping in a tent during winter and still having to go to school – that’s terrible.”

Hervé signed a short-term lease with the family in October, but tensions began to rise and in January the father of the family allegedly told him “I’m going to smash your face in” and being confronted for tampering with the electricity meter.

The immigrant couple also allegedly damaged his car and smeared the house with mud.

Hervé decided against renewing the lease and issued an eviction notice, but the couple refused to comply, and six months later they are still living in the guesthouse despite ongoing court proceedings.

The devastated homeowner is now considering selling the property he spent five years renovating, calling the situation “unmanageable”.

The incident is the latest in a series of shocking cases in France involving hosts who have become the targets of alleged violence or intimidation after offering accommodation to immigrants.

In one case, an Albanian was accused of fatally stabbing his French host and sharing footage of the attack on Snapchat, in another, an Afghan national was accused of stabbing a 73-year-old man 30 times, while in Marseille in 2022, dozens of residents were forced to leave their homes by squatters and gangs.
