University of California Los Angeles and University of California San Francisco medical schools each removed requirements for certain diversity, equity, and inclusion courses following reports by the Washington Free Beacon.
The schools told the House Committee on Education and Workforce this month “that they had discontinued mandatory social justice courses that claimed weight loss is a ‘hopeless endeavor’ and endorsed unlawful takeovers of public infrastructure,” according to the Free Beacon.
School officials provided testimonies on UCLA’s “Structural Racism and Health Equity” course and UCSF’s “Justice and Advocacy in Medicine” course while the Trump administration is investigating the first-year curricula at these schools.
The UCLA course condemned the use of the word “obesity,” claiming it is “used to exact violence on fat people.”
The San Francisco medical school’s social justice course “promoted an anti-Israel protest that shut down the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, delaying the delivery of frozen organs and putting transplant patients at risk,” the Free Beacon reported.

At the hearing, committee chair Tim Walberg said, “These classes are filled with propaganda.”
