After years of failed negotiations and bureaucratic hurdles, Poles finally have their direct train to sunny Croatia.
“We finally have a direct train connection from Poland to Croatia! We are starting in June, four days a week. Details on Tuesday,” PM Donald Tusk wrote on the social media portal.
According to earlier announcements, the price of a ticket from Warsaw to Rijeka could start at PLN 200 (€47), and the journey itself would take less than 19 hours, writes Onet. Until this time, Poles have had to transfer in Prague to reach the Adriatic.
Minister of Infrastructure Dariusz Klimczak had recently said an announcement would be coming, noting the need for international agreements to make such a route a reality.
“Our ambassador in Austria also had a personal conversation. The key is the consent of not only the Austrians but also the Slovenians. (…) We need to know this by the end of May, because I have submitted a request to launch this connection from July 1,” Klimczak had said.
Although the new rail connection is set to arrive in Rijeka, a seaside city on the Adriatic Sea, plans are now calling for it to continue on to Split, a top holiday spot for Poles as well as many other Europeans.
At the meeting of the Sejm Infrastructure Committee in April, PKP Intercity said the travel time for the Warsaw–Rijeka route would be just under 19 hours.
The train would leave Warsaw at around 2:05 p.m., stop at Opoczno Południe, Włoszczowa Północ, and Katowice before crossing the Polish border, then also stop at Ostrava and Břeclav in the Czech Republic, followed by Vienna and Graz in Austria, and Maribor and Ljubljana in Slovenia. It would finally arrive in Rijeka at around 8:45 a.m.
“PKP Intercity is not talking about it yet, but I can unofficially reveal it, noting that this is just the beginning of calculations, but it might be possible to travel from Warsaw to Croatia for PLN 200. This would be the cheapest ticket,” the minister announced in April.
Final pricing will depend on negotiations with partners from transit countries, primarily Austria.
