Putin may attack key corridor between Poland and Lithuania to encircle Baltic states, claims Germany’s top general

NATO leaders are saying Putin could attack the Suwalki Corridor, also called the Suwalki Gap, an area just 65 kilometers wide that connects Lithuania with Poland, Germany’s Bild claims, as cited by Hungary’s Portfolio.hu. Bordered by the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad to the west and Belarus to the east, this would allow Russia to encircle the Baltic states,

“The Suwalki Corridor is not just a geographical area, but a narrow strategic cross-section of NATO’s entire eastern flank,” Carsten Breuer, Commander-in-Chief of the Bundeswehr, told Bild.

He added that having control over the corridor is crucial for the protection of the Baltic Sea and the Baltic states.

In the event of war, this area could be squeezed by Moscow’s forces from two directions. In addition, Russian (and Belarusian) weapons could cover the entire region with 30-kilometer artillery. And if Russian troops were to invade the area and manage to capture the corridor, they would cut off all land connections between the Baltic states and their NATO allies.

According to the German news portal, people in the area are already prepared; they expect Russia to come, the only question is when.

NATO leaders also sense the threat to the Suwalki Corridor, with Germany deploying a 5,000-strong brigade to Lithuania (by the end of 2027), one of whose explicit tasks will be to protect the corridor. The units that have arrived so far are holding military exercises in an attempt to prepare for and repel a Russian attack.

Germany is not alone. Lithuania has also already started laying mines on its borders with Belarus and Russia, in addition to barbed wire. In addition, neighboring Poland, as well as Estonia and Latvia, have announced their withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention banning anti-personnel mines.

Meanwhile, Russia is organizing a military exercise on the Belarusian border, called Zapad ’25.
