Former Thatcher aide says Polish PM Tusk taking a page ‘out of the Putin playbook’

With accusations flying that politicians from Donald Tusk’s Civic Platform and their allies are seeking to undermine the results of the recent presidential election, one U.K. figure has taken to X to render his judgment:

“Outrageous developments in Poland. Straight out of the Putin playbook from Donald Tusk,” commented former Margaret Thatcher aide Nile Gardiner, who was responding to a scathing post by Polish Conservative MP Michał Moskal.

“Poland just had a presidential election—and the liberal-left lost. Now the Justice Minister, Tusk’s ally, hints the result might be ‘invalid’. State media echo claims of a ‘stolen vote’. This isn’t post-election analysis. It’s pre-coup propaganda. When elites deny reality, they’re not defending democracy. They’re paving the road to autocracy” Moskal posted on X.

In another repost, Gardiner commented: “I am in no doubt that my former boss Margaret Thatcher would have been appalled and greatly saddened by the dangerous developments in Poland right now, where left-wing elites led by Donald Tusk are actively undermining and destroying the hard won freedoms of the Polish people.”

In a response to an entry by Telewizja Republika journalist Michał Rachoń, the former Thatcher aide called out all of Brussels as well: “The arrogant and dictatorial EU elites do not believe in democracy. Donald Tusk is a prime example.”

In a further blow to Tusk’s credibility, audio recordings of Tusk discussing his party’s candidate list for the 2019 parliamentary elections—despite his mandate to remain neutral as European Council president at the time—have been leaked by opposition portals. The recordings of Tusk speaking with his attorney were made under the previous PiS government, with Tusk’s counsel claiming they were illegal and the conversation is protected under attorney-client privilege.
