Blade Runner 2049 (which took home two Oscars), Dune (winner of six Oscars), and Dune: Part Two (two Oscars), all directed by Denis Villeneuve, were all filmed in large part in Hungary. But will the director push Amazon to set up production there for the next Bond film?
According to the studio’s site, Villeneuve has praised “the cultural legacy of Budapest, its beauty, and world-class film crews.” He also apparently wanted either London to Budapest for Blade Runner 2049, but bemoaned the fact that London has “no more stage space” and is “like a Star Wars empire.” The film also used Korda Studios, just outside of Budapest.
We already know that Dune: Messiah is set to begin filming at Budapest’s Origo Studios this autumn.
“As the Dune franchise expands, Budapest solidifies its reputation as a major player in global cinema, showcasing the city’s capacity to support large-scale, visually stunning productions,” writes Budapest Reporter.
As production designer Judy Becker told Elle Decor: “You get a lot more for your money in Eastern Europe,” Becker says. “It’s the only place the movie could have been done.”
Budapest has been a top choice for studios due to its experienced crews, post-editing talent, costume designers and makeup artists, period architecture and diverse locations, and, perhaps most importantly, its generous tax rebates.
But sometimes it’s the little things that really count. “Luckily, it was easy to find Art Deco furniture in Hungary,” Becker also noted when describing preparations for one space.
There is no word yet from Amazon MGM if Budapest will be chosen for the next installment of James Bond. Only GoldenEye (1995) was partially filmed in the CEE country, but perhaps others are talking up the possibility that Villeneuve will choose it for this new venture, as he clearly has had positive experiences in the past.
Amazon MGM did shoot some scenes from G20 there, and The Terminal List: Dark Wolf also filmed in the Hungarian capital last year.
