Polish border chief condemns German police pushing a migrant across the border after viral video released

After a video revealed German police pushing an Afghan migrant across the border into Poland, the head of the Polish Border Guard, Major General Robert Bagan, condemned the actions of the German police.

In a statement, Bagan confirmed he spoke with Dr. Dieter Romann, president of the Presidium of the German Federal Police, about German officers leaving an Afghan citizen at the border in Gubin without waiting for a Polish Border Guard patrol, according to Polish news outlet Do Rzeczy.

Bagan condemned this action as “unacceptable” and a violation of existing agreements between the two countries. This incident quickly gained traction online, with many internet users pointing out that it was publicized following intervention from members of the Polish Border Defense Movement, a group that has faced criticism from Poland’s ruling coalition in recent days.

The situation at the German border has become increasingly tense in recent weeks, with German police accused of dumping migrants on the Polish border.

In the video from Gubin, a Polish man films the German police releasing the man across the border. However, Polish defense groups give the man food and then move back towards the German police unit.

In response to German services allegedly bringing migrants from Africa and the Middle East into Poland, and given the government’s stance, Polish citizens have formed volunteer patrols. These groups are not violent but aim to document and publicize the transfer of migrants by foreign services to counter the practice.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk sharply criticized the Law and Justice (PIS) party and the Confederation party, saying that they were encouraging “militias” at the German border, accusing them of “attacking” the Polish state.

In a post on X, Tusk wrote, “The more the Polish state regains control of its borders, the more it is attacked by PiS, Confederation, and their militias. First, they let in hundreds of thousands of migrants from Asia and Africa, making money on visas, and now they are trying to paralyze our Border Guard. We will not allow this.”

Following several days of intense pressure from the opposition, the Border Defense Movement, and some media outlets, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Tuesday that Poland would reintroduce temporary border controls with Germany and Lithuania starting July 7.
