Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan is under fire after bragging about giving a Muslim immigrant in a headscarf a brand new two-bedroom apartment in Melbourne while everyday Australians battle a housing and cost-of-living crisis.
On Wednesday afternoon Ms Allan shared a video of herself presenting the woman, named Hulya, with the keys to the spacious and modern unit in Pascoe Vale, which the premier said was one of 70 new social homes provided by Housing Choices Australia, a taxpayer-funded left-wing non-profit.
“What’s particularly important to you about this location, you were saying it’s close to family?” the Labor Premier asked the grateful free home recipient, who repeatedly thanked Ms Allan throughout the video.
“Yes, very good area, my whole family here, I’m so happy,” Hulya responded in broken English, and then confirmed she had “quite a few grandchildren” living nearby.
Ms Allan went on to comment that the home was close to public transport and services, six or seven minutes’ walk from the train station, and while viewing the kitchen Hulya was told there was room for her to install a dishwasher to match the modern appliances already included.
“We’re delivering more social homes in Pascoe Vale. For residents like Hulya, it means a place to call home close to her family, services and public transport,” Ms Allan wrote on X.
But irritated Australians questioned why social housing was being given to immigrants while locals struggled to find rentals due to the mass migration-fuelled housing crisis, with many forced into homelessness.
“Housing for immigrants and tents for Aussies,” wrote popular political commentator Lauryn Bahen.
“Everyone is looked after except multi-generational Australians,” wrote another Aussie.
“This pisses me off. I’m fucking sick to death of the priority wait list being jumped by new arrivals. I have clients who have been homeless for years as a result of family violence who cannot get housing,” said a third irate X user.
“Was she on the priority list for a govt housing? I heard she has a lot of family nearby, why couldn’t they provide a place for her to stay if they are a close-knit family?” read another popular comment.
Victoria is suffering through a homelessness crisis, and has 30% more people in housing stress than in NSW or Queensland, while also accepting record numbers of immigrants in recent years.
Ms Allan last year announced a housing target of 2.2 million new homes by 2051, which critics have said is impossible to meet, while also announcing a new pathway to permanent residency for international students during a visit to India.
In 2024 Housing Choices Australia received more than $33 million in taxpayer funds from local, state and federal governments, and its website features aboriginal and homosexual flags along with case studies of members of minority groups who have benefited from their programs.
