In Spain, a record number of births among women over 50 and the lowest number in history of mothers under 19, all due to abortion.
The year 2024 confirmed two trends. Never before have so many women over the age of 50 and so few under the age of 19 given birth. If it were not for the liberal abortion law, the number of mothers would be much higher, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
Last year, when 322,034 children were born in Spain, the record for births to mothers over 50 was broken. While in 2014 they made up only 0.028 percent of all births, in 2024 this number increased to 0.097 percent, a threefold increase.
Although these cases are a small part of the total number of births, they indicate a lasting increase. In 2023-2024, they went from 236 to 313 cases per year.
Fewer Teen Mothers
At the other end of the spectrum are young women who gave birth before the age of 19, and although they are much more numerous than those over 50, the opposite, downward trend is taking place here.
The fact that fewer children are being born does not mean that there are fewer pregnancies. More and more young women of this age are simply opting for abortion. Last year, Spain recorded the lowest number of births in this age group, totaling 5,447, which was 1.69 percent of all registered. Of these, 76 were aged 14 or younger.
Death by abortion
In 2009, when these data began to be collected, the number of births to women under 19 exceeded 13,000 and represented 2.68 percent of all births. The following year, in 2010, the Rodríguez Zapatero government approved a new abortion law that made abortion a presumed “right,” effectively allowing abortion up to 22 weeks of pregnancy, i.e., killing a child that is around 5 months old in the womb.
As a result, the number of births in this group of young women fell below 9,000 in 2013. In 2021, after another change pushed through by the leftist PSOE of Pedro Sánchez, allowing abortions for underage mothers aged 16 and 17 without the consent or knowledge of their parents, the number of births fell below 6,000 per year.
