The Turkish community in Germany is growing angry over the publication of crime statistics, which show a vast overrepresentation of migrants in the data. Federal Chairwoman of the Turkish Association Mehtap Çağlar is accusing Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) of weaponizing the latest Police Crime Statistics (PKS) to create a “hostile” atmosphere aimed at migrants.
Federal Chairwoman Mehtap Çağlar argued in Berlin that Dobrint’s focus ignores what she says are the underlying drivers of illegal activity.
“It is known that crime has primarily social causes,“ Çağlar said, adding that police data is often skewed by higher surveillance in certain areas and a greater tendency for the public to report crimes involving “strangers.”
Despite her claims, Turkish-led crime groups are active in Germany, particularly in drug trafficking, extortion, and weapons trafficking, according to Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) reports.

Violent crimes involving Turkish nationals in Germany saw a significant 47.6 percent increase in 2024 compared to the previous year.
However, the true crime rate of the Turkish community is not known, and that is largely because millions of Turks are actually German citizens, many of them dual citizens with Turkey. What is known is that Turks are a major driver of organized crime in Germany, and gang wars between Turks in Berlin, for example, are a major factor in the murder and shooting crisis in the city, with bullets discharged hitting a record high in 2024.
In general, foreigners are responsible for half of all murders in Berlin. However, many of the other half of murders are also committed by German citizens with a migration background.
Turks are also, by many measures, one of the most poorly integrated groups in all of Germany, despite many of them residing in the country for generations.
The recent data from the PKS shows that migrants are responsible for 41 percent of all violent crimes and 38 percent of all murders. In the broader “crimes against life” category, which includes manslaughter, migrants are responsible for 47.3 percent of all identified suspects. Among the countries of origin, the number of non-German suspects is dominated by nationals from Turkey, with 79,205 people.
Furthermore, the statistics show that rape has risen 72 percent since 2018, driven by mass immigration, which has led to a sharp deterioration in the safety of German women. In addition, Afghans are 14 times more likely than Germans to commit a sexual offense, while Syrians are 11 times more likely to commit violence than Germans.
During the presentation of the PKS, Dobrindt highlighted the clear overrepresentation of foreign nationals in the crime statistics. He singled out individuals from Syria and Afghanistan.
Çağlar, however, believes he is using this data to attack migrants.
“The publication of the police activity report is always used to stir up sentiment against people with migration history,” she said. She further emphasized that “darkfield studies prove that migration history no longer plays a role once factors such as educational background or socioeconomic background are comparable.“
Again, the role of poverty and crime can be called into question. For one thing, Germany has one of the most generous welfare states in the world, and true poverty in the country is rare. Migrants who are not working are entitled to free housing, social benefits, and free healthcare. Studies have also shown that groups like North Africans, even when adjusted for poverty, are incredibly more criminal than Vietnamese migrants.

The PKS data itself acknowledges that while poverty and education play a role, cultural factors also play a major role, including issues from countries where settling scores with violence are approved of. Middle Eastern and African countries most certainly fall into this category.
Regarding education, the question is also what the German state can do about students who have no desire to be educated, parents who are disengaged, and classrooms where chaos reigns. The reality is that schools with a large migrant population have major issues across Germany, and it has very little to do with a lack of trying on the part of the state, which has pumped billions into fixing the issue. This trend has been pointed out not only by individual teachers but also by the actual German Teachers’ Association.
Instead of looking for racism around every corner, Çağlar should take a hard look at her own community. She should be decrying the gangland killings, which often involve Turks killing Turks. She should look at the general trends with poor integration, lack of educational achievement, and parallel communities often still seen amongst the Turkish community, even after decades in the country.
That is not to say that she cannot celebrate the successes also seen by the Turkish community, or defend her community, but like most ethnic grievance rackets, the leaders of organizations like the Turkish Association only get paid and promoted by attacking externally — instead of looking inward. Holding a mirror to her own community would not win Çağlar or any other ethnic grievance mills any power, or funding.
This ethnic grievance jockeying should always be examined with a cynical eye, especially when Turks are notorious for voting for left-wing parties in Germany while voting for an authoritarian Recep Tayyip Erdoğan back in Turkey. Millions of Turks in Germany hold dual citizenship, which allows them to take part in both elections.
Expect these ethnic organizations, many of which would be decried as racist if ethnic Germans formed similar ones, to continue to go on the attack on any unpleasant information or data that paints their communities in a poor light, no matter how accurate that data is.
