The Iranian-born surgeon partner of former Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has been charged with rape on the Gold Coast.
Dr Vahid Reza Adib, 65, had his Burleigh Heads apartment home raided by police on Thursday, and on Friday he attended Southport Police Station voluntarily and was charged with three counts of rape, two counts of deprivation of liberty and one count of sexual assault.
Queensland Police allege Dr Adib, a prominent Brisbane-based obesity surgeon, sexually assaulted a woman in her 30s at his Goodwin Terrace residence on March 30.
He was granted police bail and will appear in court on May 14, The Courier Mail reported. Ms Palaszczuk is not accused of any wrongdoing.
Dr Adib made no comment to reporters as he entered the station with his lawyer on Friday morning, and again while leaving at about 2pm.
On Thursday police were seen searching Dr Adib’s luxury beachfront apartment, and police confirmed they had declared a crime scene but did not reveal details of the investigation.
The search warrant was executed while Ms Palaszczuk was on a promotional tour for her new memoir, Politics and Me, and spoke at an event just hours later, having cancelled a radio interview 15 minutes before its scheduled 2pm start.
When asked about the raid at the Robina book launch she said: “I’m not aware of any of that, so I can’t comment”.
Ms Palaszczuk resigned as premier in 2023 after presiding over the state government’s controversial response to Covid-19, including the closing of state borders, lockdowns, and mask and vaccine mandates.
Dr Adib moved to Australia from Iran in 1991 at age 25, and worked at Royal Brisbane Hospital as an intern before studying in Scotland, France, Austria and England and returning to Australia in 2004.
According to his website he has performed over 20,000 operations, and 10,000 weight-loss procedures.
